The best business coaches are often the ones that have been in your shoes and walked the path you’re walking; they have overcome the same challenges that are preventing you from living into your potential. You will learn a lot about your coach by listening to their story and they challenges they overcame along the way.

3. What experience do you have as a business coach?

To get to mastery in anything requires deliberate practice. The more experience a business coach has, the likelihood of them helping you achieve your goals increases. Their examples of the changes people made in their lives because of the coaching will be a good measure of the impact of their coaching. Ask them to share testimonials from real clients that demonstrates the effectiveness of their coaching. 

4. How do you challenge or confront my limiting beliefs and behaviours?

It can feel very confronting when someone challenges your pattern of behaviour or thinking. Doing this in an elegant way that makes you feel safe, listened to without judgement, and understood is important for you to explore these patterns at the required level to create the necessary transformation.

5. What is your approach when coaching a client?

Does the business coach focus only on transactional action steps to get from A to B, or do they explore the emotions, stories, language, and beliefs that contribute to the actions? If you truly want to transform your results, you need a coach that goes a few layers deeper than just behaviours and action plans.

6. What coaching packages do you offer?

Make sure you understand the packages that are on offer. Some business coaches offer a block of 24 sessions that you have to pay upfront before you start your first session. Others offer a pay as you go model, where you pay a monthly fee for the services and you control when the coaching finishes. Everyone will have different needs from their coach, and depending on the skill set of the coach, you may require only a few sessions instead of being locked into a larger block of sessions that are obsolete. Choose a coach who has the flexibility to meet your specific needs. 

7. Do I feel like I can trust this person?

This is a question to ask yourself before you make your decision. To get the best from coaching, it’s important that you feel safe enough in the coach’s presence to be open and vulnerable about what’s stopping you from stepping into your full potential. Rapport and trust are a critical part of the coaching relationship. Even if the coach is highly experienced, if you don’t feel like they are the right fit, keep looking.
